Christine Mahoney: Career Services Advisor + Voice Over Artist + Producer + Professor
When asked what she does, Christine answers that she works at the intersection of media and higher education. Although she was a full-time career advisor at a university for years, hardly any of her colleagues knew she did voiceovers, wrote for magazines, and did other media production jobs in the background.
When COVID hit, her role at the university was reduced to part-time, which freed her up to put more time into her other career interests since she was still actively involved in other things--she went on auditions and did TV and media related jobs. Suddenly, university colleagues were surprised to learn of her additional roles, and complimented her on her ability to “hustle,” even though she was just doing what she ordinarily did.
Christine’s revelation was that her coworkers only saw her as having one professional identity. In reality, Christine had many professional identities. She knew she had been using them the entire time.
From the outside, some people only saw Christine as a career advisor, but Christine has many career interests and she has never given them up. Having her university role shift from full-time to part-time gave Christine a chance to reveal more of herself, and that has proven to be a powerful lesson.
