[MASTERCLASS] Higher education and the hybrid workforce: Why universities need to adapt their career services ASAP

What's the value of a degree in a world gone hybrid?

In this new era of hybridity, workforce preparedness means knowing more than your Myers Briggs score.

Hybridity is showing up in everything from work to events to learning. Even professionals are mashing together multiple identities to do jobs that defy categories and labels, making them hybrid workers.

It's no longer enough for workers to talk about their soft skills and technical competency, they need a diversity of unrelated and interdisciplinary identities to have a competitive advantage in the job market. Hybrid jobs are growing twice as fast as traditional jobs and being paid 20-40% more (Burning Glass 2019). Those are the jobs to target.

However, do universities understand this? How are they bringing new thinking, methods, and advising into career services to support students? The college to career pipeline is an important element in the hybrid work conversation.

In his 21 stats for 2021 article in Forbes, Brandon Busteed revealed key ideas like:

  1. Degree-seeking enrollments in U.S. higher education have been down for 10 consecutive years.

  2. The #1 reason Americans value higher education is to get a good or better job.

  3. Just 6% of college and university trustees strongly agree that higher education institutions in the U.S. have a strong understanding of what employers look for in job candidates.

WOW! Did you know this?

OBJECTIVES OF MASTERCLASS

By joining us, you’ll gain insights about...

  1. Why higher education is on a decline and losing public confidence in its ability to provide career value

  2. Why career services needs to be a top strategic priority for universities if they're going to stay relevant

  3. What education and workforce development programs are up against since hybrid roles tend to be more sophisticated, meaning there aren't many entry-level positions into them and mid-career workers also need to also keep adding skills to their portfolio

  4. Why college grads need to know about hybrid work and hybrid workers (something that's not a mainstream topic), and what this means for university systems and structures

OVERVIEW

In this masterclass, I'll have a 30-minute conversation with the one and only Brandon Busteed who is at the forefront of bringing critical topics to light about the state of universities and what's next.

My background started in education, and I was a director of an innovation initiative at the University of Colorado Boulder before launching my platform on hybrid professionals, so the college to career connection is top of my mind.

Brandon is an icon in the university landscape and unafraid to share the reality of what higher ed is up against. If you're fascinated by the ways COVID has affected education, and you care about the future of work, then this will be a robust conversation you won't want to miss.
